Blind raised face flanges (BLRF) are a particular design of flange used in piping systems where a complete seal is necessary, yet the flange doesn't serve to connect to another flange or pipe.  The term "blind" signifies that one side of the flange is sealed off, hence it lacks a hole or opening for a pipe connection.  The term "raised face" describes the bulging surface on the mating side of the flange that acts as a sealing surface for a gasket.

The presence of a raised face on the open side of the flange allows it to couple with another flange featuring a corresponding raised face.  When a BLRF flange is fastened to a raised face flange, a gasket is inserted between the raised faces to establish a seal.  This assembly is appropriate for applications involving high pressure and high temperatures since the raised face provides a flat, uniform surface for the gasket to compress against.
