1.  Role of Chemical Composition

- The microstructure of stainless steel also affects its corrosion resistance.  Stainless steel usually has a single-phase austenitic or dual-phase (austenitic and ferritic) structure, which possesses good chemical stability.  The austenitic structure has good toughness and corrosion resistance, while the dual-phase structure combines the advantages of both austenite and ferrite, and exhibits better performance in certain corrosive environments.
